    A STUDY OF MISSA ARIRANG BY COOL-JAE HUH: ELEMENTS OF KOREAN TRADITIONAL FOLK MUSIC

    This document focuses on a setting of the Ordinary of the Mass, Missa Arirang, composed by Cool-Jae Huh (b. 1965). Huh is one of South Korea's most prolific and innovative composers. He is especially known for his use of Korean folk songs in Western musical settings. In the Missa Arirang, Huh employs six traditional folk songs, called Min-yo from different provinces. The musical idioms of each type of folk song vary considerably. This study explores general information about Korean folk songs and the specific use of elements of Korean folk music, such as modes, rhythmic patterns, and unique ornamentations, which appear in this piece. Arirang, the title of the Mass, is the most famous and celebrated folk song in the history of Korea. It has served as the basis for pieces in almost all musical genres. This document investigates Arirang's significance in understanding Korean culture, and introduces the four versions of Arirang adopted in Huh's work. Missa Arirang is not only a compelling choral composition, containing Korean traditional musical aspects, but also a beneficial resource to introduce traditional Korean music to non-Korean musicians. In addition, the piece delivers the message of "peace" through various musical contents in the composition

    Meeting Or Beating Analysts’ Revenue Forecasts Using Advertising Activities

    This paper investigates the relationship between the likelihood of accomplishing the revenue expectations and the use of firms’ advertising expenditures depending on firms’ growth properties. First, using the analysts’ revenue forecasts as a proxy of revenues expected by market participants, the test shows that growth firms spend more resources in their advertising activities to boost up their reported revenues than non-growth firms do. The paper also examines whether the effect of the interaction between the growth properties of firms and the use of advertising expenses on the probability of achieving analysts’ revenue forecasts can vary conditionally on firms’ business strategies. Empirical results display that the positive relation between growth firms and the probability of meeting or exceeding analysts’ revenue forecasts are statistically significant for cost leadership firms but not for differentiation firms. These findings suggest that unlike differentiators, cost leaders with growth properties are more likely to achieve favorable revenue surprises through advertising activities

    Quality characteristics of rice inoculated with Inonotus obliquus mycelia and incubated under different cultivating conditions

    This study was performed to investigate the quality characteristics of Inonotus obliquus mycelia rice incubated with I. obliquus (KCTC 256152). Different volumes of mycelial culture of I. obliquus were used for production of I. obliquus mycelia rice. Twenty percent of the mycelial culture was added to rice and designated as IOR-20, 30% as IOR-30 and 40% as IOR-40. Using the I. obliquus mycelia rice, the contents of β-1,3-glucan, betulin, total polyphenol and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazol (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, Hunter`s color values, free amino acid content, and mineral content were investigated. The β-1,3-glucan content in I. obliquus mycelia rice were in the order of IOR-30(729.7 μg/g) > IOR-20(716.0 μg/g) > IOR-40(690.5 μg/g) and those of betulin content were OR-30(1273.7 μg/g) > IOR-40 (1247.81 μg/g) > IOR-20 (1209.82 μg/g). The highest content of total polyphenols (353.6 μg/g) and activity of DPPH radical scavenging were observed in the IOR-30. The higher contents for β-1,3-glucan, betulin, polyphenol, and DPPH radical scavenging were found in 30% mycelial culture treatment, showing the best condition for the production of I. obliquus mycelia. Aspartic acid (10.28 to 29.44 μg/100 g), threonine (5.43 to 11.00 μg/100 g), serine (8.84 to 14.53 μg/100 g), glutamic acid (31.01 to 53.61 μg/100 g), glycine (4.77 to 10.26 μg/100 g), valine (2.93 to 6.57 μg/100 g), and lysine (5.20 to 14.41 μg/100 g) contents were determined in the I. obliquus mycelia rice and the order was as follows; IOR-20>IOR-30>IOR-40.     Structural and optical properties of ZnS thin films deposited by RF magnetron sputtering

    Zinc sulfide [ZnS] thin films were deposited on glass substrates using radio frequency magnetron sputtering. The substrate temperature was varied in the range of 100°C to 400°C. The structural and optical properties of ZnS thin films were characterized with X-ray diffraction [XRD], field emission scanning electron microscopy [FESEM], energy dispersive analysis of X-rays and UV-visible transmission spectra. The XRD analyses indicate that ZnS films have zinc blende structures with (111) preferential orientation, whereas the diffraction patterns sharpen with the increase in substrate temperatures. The FESEM data also reveal that the films have nano-size grains with a grain size of approximately 69 nm. The films grown at 350°C exhibit a relatively high transmittance of 80% in the visible region, with an energy band gap of 3.79 eV. These results show that ZnS films are suitable for use as the buffer layer of the Cu(In, Ga)Se2 solar cells

    Decreased expression of extracellular matrix proteins and trophic factors in the amygdala complex of depressed mice after chronic immobilization stress

    BACKGROUND: The amygdala plays an essential role in controlling emotional behaviors and has numerous connections to other brain regions. The functional role of the amygdala has been highlighted by various studies of stress-induced behavioral changes. Here we investigated gene expression changes in the amygdala in the chronic immobilization stress (CIS)-induced depression model. RESULTS: Eight genes were decreased in the amygdala of CIS mice, including genes for neurotrophic factors and extracellular matrix proteins. Among these, osteoglycin, fibromodulin, insulin-like growth factor 2 (Igf2), and insulin-like growth factor binding protein 2 (Igfbp2) were further analyzed for histological expression changes. The expression of osteoglycin and fibromodulin simultaneously decreased in the medial, basolateral, and central amygdala regions. However, Igf2 and Igfbp2 decreased specifically in the central nucleus of the amygdala. Interestingly, this decrease was found only in the amygdala of mice showing higher immobility, but not in mice displaying lower immobility, although the CIS regimen was the same for both groups. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the responsiveness of the amygdala may play a role in the sensitivity of CIS-induced behavioral changes in mice

    Chlorin e6 Prevents ADP-Induced Platelet Aggregation by Decreasing PI3K-Akt Phosphorylation and Promoting cAMP Production

    A number of reagents that prevent thrombosis have been developed but were found to have serious side effects. Therefore, we sought to identify complementary and alternative medicinal materials that are safe and have long-term efficacy. In the present studies, we have assessed the ability of chlorine e6 (CE6) to inhibit ADP-induced aggregation of rat platelets and elucidated the underlying mechanism. CE6 inhibited platelet aggregation induced by 10 µM ADP in a concentration-dependent manner and decreased intracellular calcium mobilization and granule secretion (i.e., ATP and serotonin release). Western blotting revealed that CE6 strongly inhibited the phosphorylations of PI3K, Akt, c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), and different mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) including extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) as well as p38-MAPK. Our study also demonstrated that CE6 significantly elevated intracellular cAMP levels and decreased thromboxane A2 formation in a concentration-dependent manner. Furthermore, we determined that CE6 initiated the activation of PKA, an effector of cAMP. Taken together, our findings indicate that CE6 may inhibit ADP-induced platelet activation by elevating cAMP levels and suppressing PI3K/Akt activity. Finally, these results suggest that CE6 could be developed as therapeutic agent that helps prevent thrombosis and ischemia
